The tale of three idiot vampires and their lovably dull human sidekicks continues in the newest episode of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.
This time directed by Legion and the original What We Do in the Shadows star Jermaine Clement, the second episode — which is called “City Council” — of FX’s new horror-comedy brings us back inside the home of Nandor, Nadja, Laszlo and Colin.
Things are pretty tense amongst the housemates after the Baron made his entrance during the series’ premiere episode.
We learn that the baron has made his way to Staten Island because he wants to see the vampires take over the world. Apparently, our three vampires accidentally made a promise they would help the Baron do so along, long time ago, and he’s now here to make good on their word.
Oh yeah, he brought his creepy, unflinching familiar — Shanice (Veronika Slowikowska) — who always catches people off-guard and scares the living daylights out of them, too.
Nandor and Laszlo figure the first place to start when taking over the world would be by approaching the cities leaders, so, under Colin’s recommendation, they head to a city council meeting in New York City.
Colin, obviously, loves the meetings because they’re boring as all get-out and allow him time to feed, but Nandor and Laszlo don’t know that as they enter the place expecting some big kind of duel or something.
After a rough awakening of how the process actually works, the two each to a similar conclusion: they’ve got to sway the council members into carrying their biddings out for them.
Laszlo goes after an older woman named and the president of the council, Barbara Lazarro. He pays her a visit late one night, offering to perform any task that she requires if she’s willing to hear out all her demands.
Barbara is confused and doesn’t make an exact request, but she does mention a raccoon problem she’s been having — which Laszlo still interprets as a request and proceeds to kill a literal army of the creatures, then leaving them right on Barbara’s doorstep for her to find the next morning.
Nandor has a different approach. He takes Guillermo down to the park and waits for councilman Doug Peterson (Richard Moriarty) — who’s said to be running against Barbara in the upcoming election — to show up.
Once he does, Nandor proceeds to hypnotize Doug and, with only minimal interruptions from Guillermo, gives him a list of phrases to say during tomorrow’s council meeting.
They return the following night to find that Laszlo’s plan didn’t work out so well (Barbara is horrified by the raccoons), but Nandor’s did as Doug lists off a whole bunch of profanities and threats before he’s carried out by the police — all to Nandor’s gleefully stupid face, of course.
The most interesting part of the episode, though, comes from Nadja.
After the vampires request that Guillermo takes them to a virgin breeding group, the human among the group brings them to a larping meet-up where we once again Jenna.
Just going to note that between this and Booksmart, Beanie Feldstein looks to be having one hell of a year.
While Nadja originally considered sucking Jenna’s blood, she takes pity on the poor college student when she notices all the boys ignoring her and decides to befriend her instead.
Befriending for a vampire still means sucking their blood, of course, but she only sucks just enough so that Jenna, too, will become an eternal creature of the night.
This What We Do in the Shadows episode then ends with Jenna telling her college roommate that she doesn’t feel too good, as to which the roommate responds it’s probably just mono, right before Jenna starts puking everywhere.
“City Council” is still funny, it’s fast-paced and it’s everything you could want out of a What We Do in the Shadows television show. Please, FX, don’t stop.
Tune in to FX tonight to catch the newest What We Do in the Shadows episode!
