James Gunn, Oh James Gunn. David Bautista is most certainly having the best day of his life right now.
Just six months after Disney fired James Gunn, director of the first two Guardians of the Galaxy (along with a really fun horror movie called Slither), off of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, they’ve now re-instated him to the project.
The reason for the initial firing was due to the resurfacing of a number of offensive tweets Gunn wrote over a decade.
The hiring caused a backlash among fans and the Guardians of the Galaxy crew alike, causing the main cast to draft a letter (with Bautista easily being the most outspoken of the group) in their disappointment in Disney’s decision.
Disney executives met with Gunn shortly after that letter and, reportedly, the two came to the decision that it was best he move off the project.
With Gunn then being hired on to direct a Suicide Squad sequel for DC, Disney is now admitting their mistake as they’ve asked the fan-favorite director to come back on the project.
“I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months,” Gunn posted to Twitter. “I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be. I deeply appreciate Disney’s decision and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all. I have been, and continue to be incredibly humbled by your love and support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Love to you all.”
