Escape Room fans, rejoice! A sequel is currently in the works and expected to hit theaters in spring of 2020.
Horror fans first found themselves trapped in a deadly escape room with director Adam Robitel earlier this year with a film that looked like it was going to be a dumb, disposable piece of January fluff but actually wound up to be fun, Saw-like adventure.
Now, Robitel is ready to do it all over again as he’s working with Colombia to develop an Escape Room sequel, according to a report from the Hollywood Reporter.
Screenwriter Bragi F. Schut and producer Neal H. Moritz, both of whom worked on the first Escape Room (as well as various projects, such as Season of the Witch in Schut’s case and The Fast and the Furious franchise and S.W.A.T. in Moritz’s), are both expected to return as well.
Plot details are being kept under wraps for Escape Room 2, meaning there’s no telling whether they plan to follow the cliffhanger that was set-up at the end of the first movie or if they plan to take the franchise in a different direction.
There’s also no word on whether any of the cast will return, as the first Escape Room boasted some pretty big names such as Deborah Ann Woll, Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Jay Ellis, Tyler Labine and Nik Dodani.
This decision seems somewhat like of a no-brainer as Escape Room made $56.1 domestically and $62.5 abroad, but it’s still exciting nonetheless.
Exciting for me, personally, at least. I had a great time with the first movie and would love to see them continue to make more films and turn this into the next Saw or Paranormal Activity kind of horror franchise — although, please, do something different than what the ending to the first film suggested. I’d rather they don’t make it *that* ridiculous.
Escape Room 2 will arrive in theaters on April 10, 2020.
