Remember Aquaman? Odds are you do, given how much money it’s making the box office. Well, odds are that we’re headed back to Atlantis sooner rather than later as Warner Brothers has announced a spinoff movie entitled The Trench is in the works.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have been hired to write a script for a horror-based spinoff regarding those giant fish monsters that attacked Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) in Aquaman.
Aquaman director James Wan and Peter Safran are both set to produce The Trench, while there’s not yet any word on who will actually be directing the project.
There also isn’t any word on cast, although it reportedly won’t star any of the main Aquaman cast (Momoa has to at least make a cameo, right?)
The Trench is also not tied into an official Aquaman 2, which hasn’t been officially announced yet by Warner Brothers, even though it’s really only a matter of time.
Wile Aquaman has been around for basically forever, the trench creatures weren’t introduced into the comics until 2011 when Geoff Johns took over with the New 52.
Personally, I think the announcement of The Trench is good news.
I though Aquaman was fine but I certainly didn’t enjoy it as much as some people out there. That being said, I still want to see more from this world so that I, too, can fall in love with this underwater palace.
And what better way to do so than with a horror movie? The trench sequence was my favorite part of Wan’s film, after all, so seeing more from that with the team who made Insidious and The Conjuring involved sounds like my cup of tea.
What about you? Do you want to see The Trench or are you more interested in Aquaman 2? Maybe you’re not interested in Atlantis at all and want to see DC focus elsewhere? Let us know in the comments below!
