Charlie is an introverted freshman, who is taken under the wing of two seniors.
The movie stars Logan Lerman as Charlie, Ezra Miller as Patrick and Emma Watson as Sam.
Charlie has recently been discharged from a mental health institution where he was treated for depression because of some childhood setbacks. After losing a friend to suicide the previous year, Charlie is welcomed by a new group of friends at his school as he attempts to lead a normal, teenage life.
Charlie begins tutoring Sam so that she can improve her SAT scores in order to be accepted into college. Because of their blossoming friendship, Charlie admits that he has never been kissed. Sam, who has a boyfriend, gives Charlie his first kiss, stating that she wants him to have this experience from someone who loves him.
Charlie defends his friends in a fistfight and becomes their hero. This leads to a more intimate relationship with Sam who ditched her cheating boyfriend. The newfound closeness causes Charlie to experience a flashback of his aunt sexually abusing him.
Ultimately, his psychiatrist is able to help Charlie manage beyond his repressed memories and go on to develop healthy relationships with his friends.
Written, directed and based on the book by Stephen Chbosky, the movie came out in 2012.
