Cristiano Ronaldo is finding a new place to set records
Monday, the Portuguese athlete became the most followed user on Instagram, surpassing singer Selena Gomez.
Ronaldo, a world-famous soccer player, currently has over 144 million followers on Instagram and uses his profile to share in-action shots of him during games, pictures lounging at home with his family, and sponsored posts with brands like Nike. This past July, he moved from Real Madrid to the Italian team Juventus, which was a four-year $340 million deal according to Forbes.
The rise in followers after this transfer makes sense, as both Spain and Italy are countries with extremely dedicated soccer (football) fan-bases, and the engagement on his social media perfectly illustrates that.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the picture below proves a Cristiano Ronaldo selfie is worth over 8 million likes...

As Ronaldo's followers increased, the slow down in follower growth for Gomez makes sense as well. The "Hands to Myself" singer has taken a social media hiatus for over a month now. At the end of September, she posted on her Instagram that she's "grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us" and that she's "equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment..."
About two weeks later, CBS reported that the singer had been hospitalized for mental health treatment.
The two celebrities are relatively close in followers currently, but both have a nice lead over the number three most-followed celebrity, Ariana Grande who has 132 million followers.
