John Lennon was born on Oct. 9, 1940, and would have turned 78 this year, if he were still with us.
Lennon was just 40 years old when he was killed on Dec. 8, 1980, but his impact on music is still felt today. Whether you enjoy his songs with The Beatles or his solo work, chances are you have a favorite song that features Lennon’s distinct voice.
“Imagine” has gone down as his great musical achievement, a song that seems simple on the surface, but is filled with an important message. The track is unavoidable on the radio still and artists continue to cover it. But during Lennon’s 10-year solo career, which included five years off as a househusband to raise Sean, he did manage to release several great songs.
Some are also as well known as “Imagine,” like “Give Peace A Chance,” “Working Class Hero” and “Watching the Wheels.” But many others go unappreciated. Still, nearly every song on this list has also probably appeared on one of the many collections Yoko Ono has released in recent years, since she only has so much material to work with.
So, without any further delay, let’s get moving. “It’ll be (just like) Starting Over.”
