The trailer for Mary Poppins Returns dropped today, and it’s sweeter than a spoonful of sugar.
The trailer features many familiar people and places: Cherry Tree Lane, with their neighbor Admiral Boom’s house with its shipshape roof; St. Paul’s Cathedral, where the Bird Woman fed the pigeons; and the Banks' family home, which a grown-up Jane and Michael (Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw, respectively) now inhabit with Michael’s children.
Then we’re quickly launched into an entirely new world of fantasy: swimming at the bottom of the ocean, riding a bicycle in the sky, a vaudevillian stage and more in bright, vivid technicolor.
The trailer features a similar blend of live action and animation as Mary Poppins did—and you can catch a glimpse of an animated penguin, too, along with an original song sung by Blunt.
Mary Poppins Returns boasts an all-star cast led by Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda and includes Julie Walters, Angela Lansbury, Meryl Streep and Colin Firth. And, filling the role of bank executive Mr. Dawes, Jr. is Dick Van Dyke, dancing atop his desk to the delight of Poppins and company. Everyone in Hollywood turned out for the chance for this dazzling sequel, though one face in particular will be absent.
Julie Andrews, the original Mary Poppins and beloved film icon, turned down an offer for a cameo. Rob Marshall, director of the sequel, explained to Entertainment Weekly: “Julie was incredibly gracious, and we talked about it in a very general way but she made it clear right up front. She said, ‘This is Emily’s show, and I really want it to be Emily’s show. I don’t want it to be, “Oh, here comes that Mary Poppins.” I don’t want that. I really want her to take this and run with it, because she will be brilliant.’”
Mary Poppins Returns comes out in theaters December 19. Check out the trailer below!
