Out of all the experts I heard from, Felice Cohen broke down the ground work as well as insight on the process behind getting organized. Just because you should, doesn't mean that's why you do it. Until you understand why, success could elude you.
Before you toss one old piece of Tupperware you need to find your WHY. Do you want to get rid of stuff so you'll be able to find what you're looking for? To spend less time cleaning stuff? Working to pay for stuff? Want to be healthier? More mindful? Finding your WHY is key, because when it comes to doing the "hands on" like tossing or eating carrots instead of cheesecake, it's not easy, but having that WHY as a reminder will help you stick to it.
Here are 3 hands on tips to get you motivated:
1. Get rid of 5 things a day. Anything, even an old paperclip. If you do that for a week, that's 35 things!
2. Make it a game. Roll a pair of dice. Go room to room, or just in one closet and whatever number you roll, that's how many items must go.
3. Set a timer. Maybe 30 minutes, an hour. When the timer goes off, stop, you're done. Unless you want to keep going.What these exercises do is they remove the burden of thinking you need to get it all done at once. What often happens is once you start to take these baby steps,you get into it, you see progress and want to keep going. Also, enjoy the process. Think of it as a walk down memory lane, a glimpse into your past. Put on your favorite music, something that puts a little pep in your step.
Felice Cohen's book, "90 Lessons for Living Large in 90 Square Feet (...or More)" is a want-to guide that breaks down that "I'm overwhelmed" barrier and gets people motivated with simple lessons.
